have very nice trade, for african djembe

I am looking for a nice hardwood african djembe in about the five hundred dollar range.
I have traditional hawaiin shell leis (necklaces) for trade. These necklaces are made out of one of the rarest shells in the world. Kahelelanis. Kahelelani means "The pathway to heaven" . Back in the day these necklaces were made for only the king and queen of hawaii, when they passed from this life to the next. hence "The pathway to heaven" Today they are still made by the local kauain and niihaun families. I was blessed enough to learn how to make them in kauai. They are the only shell in the world considered a gem.
There are anywhere from 5 to 3000 shells on each necklace depending on the style. The prices ranges are from 100 to 1000 dollars for the ones that i make. You can check them out on my tribe photos. I am willing to trade a double strand rope for a nice djembe.
Thank you

hey there, dancers and drummers -

Remember, Camp Fareta is coming up soon -- July 6-13 in central California -- with an amazing line-up of master drummers and dancers from Guinea, Senegal, and Mali, hosted by Youssouf Koumbassa. There are work-exchange opportunities, group rates if you get together a group of eight or more from your area, and you can pay by Paypal.

Check http://dancingvillage.com/ for all the details, including a registration form and lots of photos from the last two years. The vibe is sweet and harmonious, there will be a delicious international menu prepared by a former Esalen chef, including some African meals, and the location, near Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks, is beautiful. It's an amazing opportunity for a West African immersion without leaving the States. We hope you'll join us!

Greetings, Drummers and Dancers --

Camp Fareta, a West African drum and dance camp in central California, will be happening July 6-13, and the early registration rates end May 1, so now's the time to register!

There will be an amazing crew of artists from Guinea, Senegal, and Mali, two drum classes and three dance classes a day, fire circles at night, an amazing chef from Esalen, a kids' program for the young ones, work-exchange opportunities, and a friendly village atmosphere, all in a beautiful location with a lake for swimming, canoeing, or just a quick dip after class.

Camp Fareta is hosted by Youssouf Koumbassa, a master dancer, choreographer, and teacher from Guinea, West Africa. The other artists who will be in residence include:

Drummers: M'Bemba Bangoura, Fode Bangoura, Mangue Sylla, Bolokada Conde, Wadaba Kourouma, Karamba Dioubate, Amadou Camara, Moussa Traore, Cheikh M'Baye, and Lansana Kouyate (balafon)

Dancers: Abdoulaye Sylla, Moustapha Bangoura, Alseny Soumah, Mariama Camara, M'Mah Toure, Marietou Sano, Djeneba Sako, Babacar M'Baye, and Mariama Basse (Unfortunately Marie Basse-Wiles is unable to attend because she will be in Senegal.)

So check it out at dancingvillage.com, where you'll find lots of photos from previous camps, plenty of information, and a registration form to download and fill out. If you're not ready to commit yet, that's okay too -- it's still early and there's plenty of space. You can write back on Tribe or email campfareta@yahoo.com if you have questions.

We hope to see you there!

peace,

christina

More news on Camp Fareta -- dundun dance, balafon, Paypal

hey there, dancers and drummers --

Here are a few more pieces of information for you, in case you're still thinking of signing up for Camp Fareta in California, July 8-15, but haven't done so yet, or you're already signed up and want to get even more excited!

First, due to popular demand, we will have 2 dundun dance classes at camp, one with Mariama and one with Nima or M'Mah. One will occur earlier in the week and one will be later in the week.

Also Lansana will be available for balafon lessons. If we get enough people who want to study with him, we will offer the classes for free; otherwise they will be available for a separate fee. So let us know if that's something that interests you.

We also want to let you know that you can pay for camp with a credit card via Paypal. Just let us know if you'd like to use that option and we'll hook you up.

And a clarification -- the "regular" rates (not the early rates) for camp have been extended to July 2. That means the price is still $750 for the week or $120 a day. After July 2, we will be in the "late registration" category, with an extra $20 added on to each individual or family/group.

Check dancingvillage.com for lots of photos from last year's camp and a registration form for this year. We're looking forward to a great camp and we hope to see you there!

be well -

No Tamba this summer...Camp Fareta early rates extended

Hey there, lovers of African drum and dance --

We just heard that Tambacounda will not be happening this summer, so in case some of you were planning to go to that camp, we're extending the early (cheaper) rates for Camp Fareta until May 22, to give you some time to think about joining us this summer at Youssouf Koumbassa's camp in California, July 8-15.

Check Youssouf's website for lots of details, including pricing and registration info, or write to campfareta@yahoo.com if you have specific questions.

hey there, drummers and dancers --

We're setting up group rates for adults who come to the full week of Camp Fareta...take $35 off each if you register with 8 folks from your "area" -- such as the Bay area, Santa Cruz, Los Angeles, San Diego, Sebastopol/Mendocino, Garberville/Arcata, etc. etc.

Rates go up May 15, so now's a good time to start making plans to be at camp! You can check Youssouf's website for lots of info about fees, work-exchange, and all that -- westafricandance.com.

It was great last year (great teachers and classes, incredible food, beautiful weather, friendly vibe) and will probably be even better this year -- we hope to see you there!

hey there -

I'd love to hear from folks about your favorite African dance and drum teachers, both because I may not already know of them for my own personal enjoyment, and we're also gearing up for Camp Fareta (July 8-15) and I'd love to know who would be talented artists who are also good teachers. If you were going to a West African drum and dance camp, who would you like to see there?

thanks -

Conga Classes in the East Bay?

I was given a Conga and can't make it sound nearly as good as my friend once did.
Is there a beginner class that anyone is aware of in the East Bay?
Wednesdays would work great!
But it didn't sound like that class would work for my level.

hi, folks -

We've just added Babacar and Cheik Mbaye to the list of teachers at Camp Fareta...they'll be teaching sabar dance and drum. Check Youssouf Koumbassa's website, westafricandance.com, for a full list of the artists who will be attending.

We've also extended the regular registration date to June 27...and then there's an extra $20 fee, so if you've been thinking about it, now's the time to register! We're trying to encourage folks to sign up now so we don't get caught unprepared food-wise if a bunch of unregistered folks show up on site.

thanks and be well -

why so much spam on this Tribe?

Why is there so much spam on this Tribe, and how can we get rid of it? I'm kinda new to the whole Tribe thing and don't know what the options are, but there's a ton of irrelevant stuff on this list that's making it hard to see what's really relevant. What's all this stuff from CIIS, and Holehead, etc.? Is there a way to get it removed from the list?

thanks -

Musician ill with anthrax from infected animal skins

New York man falls ill with anthrax
Musician reportedly had contact with natural anthrax sources

Wednesday, February 22, 2006; Posted: 6:15 p.m. EST (23:15 GMT)

(CNN) -- A New York musician has tested positive for anthrax that authorities say came from unprocessed animal skins used to make traditional African instruments.

He is in stable condition at a Pennsylvania hospital, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

"The man poses no public health threat of transmitting anthrax to the community or the health care providers caring for him," the department said in a statement. (What is anthrax?)

The 44-year-old man recently traveled to Africa, where he bought animal hides and took them back to New York City to make drums, the department said.

The man, who plays native African music, complained of flu-like symptoms before collapsing last week at the end of the Kotchegna Dance Company show at Mansfield University in Mansfield, Pennsylvania, sources said.

The department said he was taken to Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, Pennsylvania, about 50 miles northeast of Mansfield.

Blood tests were taken Friday, and on Tuesday the tests detected anthrax bacteria in the man's system, according to the state health department.

"At this time, there is no indication that the exposure was from an intentional release of anthrax," according to a release from the department. "The patient has a history of contact with unprocessed animal hides and recently traveled to Africa, where he purchased unprocessed hides."

It adds, "Unprocessed animal hides can be a source of anthrax spores."

Anthrax bacteria lie dormant in tough cells called spores until conditions are favorable for them to infect animals or humans.

New York City and federal authorities discussed the case at a news conference Wednesday afternoon, where they assured the public that the incident does not pose a health threat. (Watch Mayor Michael Bloomberg explain how the case is an isolated one -- 3:27)

The FBI and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are assisting local authorities in the investigation.

It includes an assessment of the patient's home and workspace in Brooklyn. Authorities also are trying to find anyone who might have had contact with the hides as well as members of the dance company, who are all from New York City, according to the state health department news release.
